Purpose

The 531 Fund provides financial support to local charities serving southern Wisconsin, with a strong focus on organizations operating within the 531 zip code region. This application process is designed to simplify generosity, strengthen trusted local organizations, and maximize collective community impact. One Organization. Many Causes. Collective Impact.

Eligibility Criteria

Organizations applying for funding must:

  • Be a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in good standing
  • Primarily serve communities within the 531 zip code area
  • Demonstrate a clear, measurable community impact
  • Align with the 531 Fund’s mission and values
  • Be willing to participate in stewardship, reporting, and promotional efforts

Note: Priority is given to organizations that actively engage with the community and collaborate with other local partners.

Grant Cycles

The 531 Fund operates on event-based cycles, depending on funding availability.

Annual Application Cycle
Applications must be submitted by December 31 and will be reviewed by the Board of Directors at the January board meeting for approval to participate in fundraising efforts during the upcoming calendar year.

Event-Specific Support
Funding opportunities are tied directly to signature events such as:

  • Christmas Festival
  • Freezin’ for a Reason
  • The Balloon Adventure

Application Process

Step 1: Complete Full Application
Organizations are invited to complete the full application, which includes:

  • Program description and outcomes
  • Budget and funding needs
  • Explanation of how funds will be used
  • Measurable impact goals
  • Commitment to reporting and recognition

Step 2: Review & Evaluation
Applications are reviewed by the 531 Fund Board of Directors using criteria such as:

  • Community need and impact
  • Financial responsibility and transparency
  • Alignment with 531 Fund priorities
  • Collaboration and sustainability

Step 3: Award Notification & Agreement
Approved organizations receive:

  • Written notification of grant award
  • Grant agreement outlining:
    • Use of funds
    • Reporting requirements
    • Recognition and partnership expectations
  • Funds are typically distributed within 60 days after the event concludes.

Reporting & Stewardship

Grant recipients are expected to:

  • Submit a brief impact report within 6–12 months after grant receipt
  • Share stories, photos, or testimonials when possible
  • Participate in recognition opportunities (events, social media, annual report)

The above ensures transparency and helps tell the collective story of local impact.

While the 531 Fund supports a broad range of causes, priority is often given to programs serving:
